Here we are !, even this year with the new edition of Pianeta Amiga. This is the 13th edition. The most important show of the Amiga scene. Like every year we wish to thanks Jasa Communications and Acube-Systems for the show, that will be remembered for a very long time, as the most important in the last years. As usual there were a lot of exhibitors who showed new software for all the new amiga operating systems ( Aros, MorphOS and Amiga OS 4.1 ). Here the exhibitors of the show :

Acube-Systems showed the last revision of Amiga OS 4.1 for the AmigaOne and Sam440EP. I was really impressed about the last update. Lots of things were updated with the implementation of new elements never seen before on our beloved system. Here the list of the new elements showed at Empoli ( a lot of works has been done under the skin, these are only a part of the complete work ) :

  • New System notification ( Ringhio )
  • New Screenmode editor and Monitor managment
  • New Amigashell
  • New Sirion driver with early support for USB 2.0
  • New Kernel
  • New Video driver
  • New Startup-Manager
  • New Themes and Icons
  • New Desktop effects

The new System notification, codename Rnghio has been developed by Massimiliano Tretene ( Acube-Systems ). This new feature will inform us about everything is going on the Amiga OS, like the execution of a program such as RSS Reader ( not yet available on its last revision ) that will show up on the Workbench RSS news. Even a music player will show up information about the mp3 we are listening in that moment and so on with all the programs that are running on our Amiga OS ( check the gallery to see it in action ! ).

The new Screenmode editor allows, thanks to DDC implementation, to have all the monitor resolutions ready to use without using the tooltype, like it happens today on Windows® and others operating systems.

The new AmigaShell has now the possibility to have the tab instead of opening differents shell on the workbench ( like the tab on OWB ). Moreover it offers colors customization for the background and the cursor ( like on Vinced and other Shell ).

The new Sirion driver showed the long awaited USB 2.0 ( this is an early version ) support for the Amiga OS 4.1. Moreover it was bugfixed offering a better support for USB 1.1 especially on Sam and Sam-Flex.

Another interesting thing, was the new Startup-Manager. This utility will replace the WBStartup directory. This utility will manage all the programs in the startup of Amiga OS like AmiDock does with the programs in its toolbar. It will be possible to add/remove programs and set the priority with few mouse-clicks.

Like a rolling thunder were the new icons realized by Martin " Mason " Mertz and the new themes of Amiga OS 4.1. Some of them realized by Massimo Tantignone ( who made the Amiga OS GUI ). Seeing the new themes and the new icons was amazing ! now you' ll look at Amiga OS like you never did before. Moreover was possible to see new shadow effects on the Workbench title bar and on the Windows.

The kernel and the driver video were also updated and bugfixed, now the memory problem on the sam has been fixed and the video driver offers better playback on programs such as MPlayer and DVPlayer.

Acube-Systems also showed the new debian iso ( with new kernel ) for the Sam. It was amazing to see how the new kernel speed up Debian on Sam. Now the system is really fast and loads programs in few seconds. We tried the Iceweasel browser and it worked without problems loading and scrolling webpages very smooth. We then tried an avi movie with the video player included in the distro and it played the movie without loosing frames. OpenOffice was another surprise, it opened files and browsed through them without problems, now all these programs can be used on the sam for a daily use. For all these improvments we wish to thanks Giuseppe Coviello

AmigaSoft, aka Andrea " Afx " Palmaté, showed the long waited port of Gnash for Amiga OS 4.1. Finally another gap has been fixed. Starting from today will be possible to play, on our Workbench, Flash® games or play movies. At the moment is possible to play movies only running the player as stand alone, but a plugin has been planned for OWB/Netsurf. This is an early beta of Gnash, infact now there is a problem about the cpu, making the player very huge to use, but Andrea was pretty sure that it will be solved with the help of Gnash team in the future.

Andrea also showed some new games that will be released as soon as possible, some of the games were :

  • ULTIMA VIII PAGAN
  • OPEN TRASPORT TYCON
  • LINCITY 2.0
  • FOOBILIARD
  • HERO OF ALLACROST

All these games were really good and nice to see, we hope to play them as soon as possible to have hours of fun ! Thanks Andrea

With the effort of Paolo Besser ( redactor of The Games Machine ) was possible to see Icaros Desktop in action. Now Aros is more than a simple beta, different programs were running together on Wanderer like MPlayer, OWB and some nice 68k demo that ran thanks to UAE. Now, thanks to a script realized by Paolo, is possible to run directly an adf game or program without loading UAE and then the game/program. The user simply click on the adf and it will be loaded on Wanderer. It was possible to see Aros on two different configurations, the first a netbook and the second a pc-desktop with an AMIGA 1200 as keyboard using the LYRA adapter. My advice is to try Aros if you have never seen an Amiga OS in action, you won't be disappointed

Thanks to Stephen Jones, who did a long journey ( thanks for coming to Italy and see Pianeta Amiga ), was possible to see Aros on the Imica system. It was possible to see lots of programs running on Wanderer.

Another great job was realized by Christiano " Seiya " Cherchi ( AmigaDemoMania ). He did a video of the show, you can see it at the following address : video1,video 2.

Like every year BitPlane was there with the new issue of the magazine. Moreover was possible to read and subscribe to AmigaFuture, a german magazine now available in english ! So don't miss this opportunity, subscribe it now !

At the PalaEsposizioni was possible to see and try thanks to Stefano " Lecta " Guidetti ( translator and betatester ) and Massimiliano Tretene ( developer and betatester ) new programs ( or new version ). One of this was Blender, the long waited 3D program was ready for Pianeta Amiga. We were all surprised to see how the Sam was able to render and play different animations and files ( i like very much the Dolphin animation ). At Empoli was possible to see also the new version of DVPlayer, that with the new video driver gained a good speed up in performance.

Andrea " Guruman " Maniero showed last version of MorphOS with some 3D games, 68k demos and programs. Andrea showed Homeworld, VirtualGrandPrix di Paolo Cattaneo, QuakeGL. All these games ran without problems on his Pegasos II G4. Even the 68k demos were nice to see thanks to Trance ( the Just in Time Emulator in MorphOS ). Another interesting thing to see was SWFDec for MorphOS. This Flash player is already integrated in OWB thanks to a plugin realized by the author of the port Fabien " Fab "Coeurjoly. Here on Ambient ( the MorphOS desktop ) was possible to play Flash games with the stand alone player, or plays movies into OWB thanks to the plugin. Have a look to the gallery to see OWB in action with Youtube and Google Videos

The last but not the least, there was OS4Games with the last issue of The Vague. This is a MagDisk available for all the Amiga OS system. Here you can find articles about programming, games, music, graphic and demo-scene. Moreover, was possible to look a fixed version of the first issue.

So, here we are, even this year, at the end of this wonderfull show called Pianeta Amiga. This show has seen, since a long time, people coming from all over the world. This thirteen edition had a lot of visitors and many " new faces " who came to see the " Alien " operating system called Amiga OS. They did question, photos and looked everystand to see this operating system that maybe is not so alien as we could think or imagine.. and maybe this " alien " is slowly but constantly going on to reach the ambitious goal.. See you next year same planet, stay tuned !
